Behaviour
I truly believe that:
ALL BEHAVIOUR IS COMMUNICATION!
-
Is the student: tired, anxious, hungry?
-
Let's look at ABA – ABC (Antecendents, Behaviour, Consequence). Change the environment rather than focusing on changing behaviour.
-
Look at the behaviours. Is the student wanting to escape, seek attention, do theywant something, and/or is it sensory?
-
Positive reinforcements.
-
Watch for triggers - and move students out of the way when necessary.
-
Calm/sensory room, music, walk
-
Create a safety/behaviour plan when necessary
-
Problem solve - example: Kelso's wheel –
-
Teach self-regulation
-
Cool down, rock, heavy object, calm environment, weighted blanket, dim lights
Social Behaviour
Teaching how to interact socially can be important for students to achieve, and maintain peer relationships. We can do this by role-playing, using social stories (view different relationships/situations). Visuals are important as well as videos.
