Communication Tools

It is important not to overload here. Is the student receiving too much information? Break down the task, use a soft voice, take breaks, have patience. Also, incorporate fun into learning. 

 

Writing (First OT to rule out motor skills)

 

If there are writing issues, there options to express information without holding back creative/critical thinking and ideas.

  • Draw stories instead of writing them.

  • Give extra time.

  • Hand over hand

  • Wet, try, dry

  • Mazes, dot-to-dot

  • Pencil grips

  • Speech to text technology

  • Applications such as Book Creator – stories, fonts, images, Voice recordings

  • EA help brainstorm, organize, edit.

 

Reading (literacy and meaningful) - First OT to rule out vision, hearing

  • KWL charts (What do you know, what do you want to know, what did you learn).

  • Visualise pages to help remember story-lines

  • High frequency words, sight words

  • Rehearsal

  • SCM (Self-correcting material)

  • Read together with an EA or a Peer

  • Take letters find things that start with a particular letter (“W” for example – window)

  • Rhymes

  • Practice clusters (can be in a game format)

  • Book creator

 

Speaking Communication - OT to rule out issues with mouth, tongue, hearing

  • ACC (Augumented Alternative Communication)

  • Boardmaker

  • Communication boards/cards

  • Points to pics

  • Gestures

  • Proloquo

  • Text to speech technology

  • Practice making sounds (and mouth movements) in mirror (improve articulation)

  • Songs

  • Slow things down

  • Improves interaction with others
