SMART GOAL REFLECTIONS

What was my goal?

There is a child that has ADHD, and has issues getting his items organised at the beginning of the day in the classroom. My goal is to use Board Maker to create a visual list for him, so that he can be independent organising himself in the morning.

How was the process (obstacles, timeline, changes)?

The process had simple moments, and had some challenging moments. I thought that setting up Boardmaker might be a small challenge since I hadn't used it in awhile, but it took much longer to figure it out, and get my computer able to use it. I did watch a couple of tutorials, re-signed up for the application, and then I couldn't get it working. Finally figured out that I needed to update Adobe Flash. Once that was done, I was ready to go. That being said, it took a little while playing with the features to figure out how to use it.

Once I knew how to use it, I itemised the morning elements for the child, I picked out a template, modified it, and could then easily put in text and pictures. The next stage was to laminate, and put velcro on the back of check marks, so that when each task was completed the child could mark off that they were done.

The next step was to teach the child how to use the list. The list was very simple with colourful graphics, so the child was interested, and with prompts could go through each item, and happily checked off what was accomplished. Gradually we could move to him going through each on this own. Sometimes he would forget an item, or get distracted, but with a simple prompt, he was back on task, and I feel that with repetition, and habit, he can become completely independent in the morning.
